Vacation schemes are a fantastic way for aspiring lawyers to develop an understanding of the law in practice and explore the kind of firm they are best suited to. Ellisons’, week-long, Vacation Scheme has enabled me to gain an insight into the workings of the firm and its culture. Overall, it is safe to say that Ellisons’ values are reflected day-to-day across the firm. From Apprentices to Partners, everyone at Ellisons contributes to the friendly and inclusive environment, and I felt truly supported by everyone I met throughout the week.

On the first day of the scheme, the Learning and Development Manager, Becky, welcomed everyone, asking us questions and getting to know a bit about us all. She immediately made me feel comfortable, and even more excited for the week ahead. We then had an IT and Health and Safety induction. Throughout the day, we had introduction meetings from a range of departments including Dispute Resolution, Commercial Property and Private Client, as well as a trainee Q&A with Evie and Honor. Listening to colleagues talk about the work they do was both insightful and inspiring. I found it particularly interesting to hear from Georgina in the Marketing Team at Ellisons, as this business aspect is as fundamental to the firm’s growth and ambition as the legal teams are. Ultimately, every colleague spoke with such passion for both their work and the firm, making it clear that they genuinely enjoy working at Ellisons and feel driven by the firm’s continuous support.

From day two I sat within the Private Client department. My supervisor, Amy, who is Partner at Ellisons, was friendly and approachable. She introduced me to the team, helped me to get set up for the week and was there to answer any questions I had. Attending client meetings with Amy enabled me to not only experience the dynamic nature of private client work and how the law looks in practice, but also to witness the high level of customer care provided by Ellisons. By notetaking throughout the meetings, I was then able to draft clear and concise attendance notes. This exposure and experience enabled me to understand the importance of client care and building long-term relationships.

Throughout the week, I found reading and understanding files interesting. One task required me to create an excel spreadsheet and log the progress of client matters. The range of work within the Private Client department demonstrates the range of skill and expertise across the team.

Also, I had the opportunity to attend client meetings at another office with Leigh, a Chartered Legal Executive at Ellisons. Having spent some time with Amy the day before, this experience enabled me to appreciate the different approaches that lawyers take to achieve the best results for clients. Leigh explained legal processes, online systems and fee information to me, which I may not have come across previously. Her approachable nature enabled me to ask lots of questions and find out more about her experiences, life at Ellisons and the future of the firm.

On the last day of the scheme, we were invited to attend the Ipswich office in the Connexions building. Following an interactive cyber security talk with Jon, we then had an interview skills session with Becky. These meetings enabled me to prepare myself to work and interview for any business. Following this, I had the opportunity to practice a mock interview with Becky. This was a great experience for the firm to get to know a bit more about me and for me to demonstrate my professional skills.

Overall, the Ellisons Vacation Scheme was a fantastic opportunity to get an insight into the brilliant work, colleagues and ethos of the firm. Ellison’s values shone through during every aspect of this week, and it was an honour to experience it.
