October is Menopause Month and 18th October is World Menopause Day. Although more widely spoken about today, the menopause still remains something of a taboo subject and it can be difficult to talk about.

This includes in relationship breakdowns, and the menopause and its impact on relationships and divorce can often get lost in the emotional tangle and legal processes of separation and divorce.

According to a survey by the Family Law Menopause Project and Newson Health Research and Education, 7 out of 10 women experiencing marriage difficulties said the symptoms of the perimenopause or menopause put a strain on their family life. The survey of 1,000 women found that 70 per cent blamed the menopause for their divorce or marriage problems, with some saying it increased arguments or domestic abuse. The menopause usually occurs between 45 and 55, the average age in the UK is 51 and divorce rates peak for couples aged 45 – 49 years old, so the statistics appear to support this.

It is not always easy to tell if it is the menopause that is affecting your relationship or if it is simply highlighting issues that already existed.

Experts say the number one reason for divorce is lack of communication, and talking about the menopause is no exception. So, it’s important to talk to each other, friends and family, medical professionals or therapists to find out what really is behind your relationship difficulties and what can be done to improve things.

As well as the physical signs of the menopause which can include hot flushes, weight gain and memory loss, women may be trying to deal with the emotional impact which can include anxiety, depression, lack of self-confidence and difficulty in accepting body changes.
